Sam

My legs were restless. My knee jumped up and down as Damien’s truck followed the road back to the B&B. It had more to do with anxiety than anything neurological. The police? How had they found me? And what did they think I’d done?

“It has to have something to do with Robert,” I murmured.

“Don’t borrow trouble.” Damien put his hand on my bobbing knee. It was a gesture of affection as well as comfort. “You don’t need to say anything without a lawyer.”

I jolted. “A lawyer? What would I need a lawyer for?”

Damien’s jaw clenched as he steered into the B&B parking area and shut off the engine.

“You know something.” The accusation flew from my lips. “More secrets, Damien? Really?”

He swallowed visibly. “It was for your protection.”

Unbelievable. “Do not lie to me, Damien Moss or I swear I will shout from the rooftops about you and your entire goddamned freakshow of mutants and nutjobs.”

He flinched. “Is that really how you see us?”

It wasn’t. My temper had surged and gotten the best of me. The words had flown from my mouth before I could water them down to something more civilized. I was hurt. Damien made me feel like a victim. Helpless and clueless. It pissed me off until I had to lash out.

I would never endanger the coven or the shifters. I liked them. I was one of them. So was John. Damien and his endless lies made me so fucking angry. It was no excuse for the empty threat but I wasn’t about to apologize when he was in the wrong.

“Tell me what you know.” My voice was tight. “Right now.”

He swallowed. “Your husband reported your credit card as being stolen.”

“What?”

“I had Mel take your card to Charleston. To plant a false trail and keep you safe. Chances are the cops are here to check up with the stolen card.”

“But how did you get my card?” Even as I said it, my mind spun back to the coven meeting, when John had asked for money to go into town. “You used my son in your little scheme?”

The shrill accusation echoed off the small interior of the truck.

Damien removed his sunglasses and pinned me with his icy blue gaze. “Our son. And he volunteered. He wants to protect you as badly as I do.” His chin lifted in defiance.

“Unbelievable.” I popped the door to the truck.

“What are you going to say to them?” Damien asked.

“I don’t know.” It was the truth. I’d have to answer their questions.

Damien retrieved my cane from the back of the truck and handed it to me. His body was still and he radiated tension from every pore. A small petty part of me was glad he was on edge. He’d set this whole thing in motion after all.

He was just like Robert. Two-faced. Only in Damien’s case, it was literal.

The temperature was dropping, and the seashell chimes on the front porch of the B&B jingled as we made our way to the door. I concentrated on walking, hating that my sturdy cane didn’t fit on the steps.
